Monthelie

The surface area is 12 ares and 55 centiares, equivalent to 3 ouvrées. It is planted in an area traditionally used for red wine, just above Les Teurons, at the foot of the city reservoirs in Beaune.

It was purchased in the 1930s by Marie-Pierre’s great-great-grandfather, Pierre Germain, and cultivated by the family before being replanted by François and Thomas in 2020.

The decision to plant white grapes was due to a seam of white marl at this location, which is favourable for Chardonnay. It is classified as a Beaune Premier Cru.

Tasting

Raphael GIMENEZ-FAUVETY ‘s tasting notes – Retailer ; “De Corps et d’Esprit” in Paris

Very pale gold robe with subtle green highlights, highly luminous. An elegant, fresh nose with a beautiful verticality that runs straight along the marbled limestone, radiating great purity. Floral delicacy leans towards a bouquet of wildflowers; the fruit is discreet but refined: sweet apple reminiscent of Royal Gala or Golden Delicious, poached Comice pear, grape juice and the skin of white peach. In the background, a familiar aromatic evolution that we also discerned in the Hautes Côtes; hints of acacia honey and lavender, and a fine sweetness reminiscent of meringue, icing sugar and anise – all present but very discreet. Tender grass and delicate water flowers, such as daffodils, complete the profile.
A savoury palate, with very ripe fruit once again; the distinct presence of apricot jam with saffron, alongside intensely spiced orange (bird’s-eye chilli), hot or even fiery passion fruit, flambéed mirabelle plums, lemons and limes, clementine, a little pomelo juice with white pepper and Espelette pepper.
Intense finish; the acidity enlivens both citrus and spices; the marked presence of salt returns – reminiscent of salt from the south (Berre, Camargue?).
Fried whiting or smelt, or a parrillada of fish and seafood from the plancha; Roman-style calamari fritters as prepared in Spain, or English-style fish and chips or haddock – best in a year or two.
